Reviews

“Johnette Downing has done it again! This is a perfect book to read to (and sing with!) children whether they are in your house or at school. Deborah Kadair’s fanciful illustrations are delicious, and Johnette’s helpful explanations provide a learning experience to go along with the fun. Do yourself a favor, and ‘come and eat it up’!”

Nancy Silber, Music Teacher, The Dalton School, NY

Cayden’s comments: “I really liked this book a lot! It is a book about things in the Amazon. I didn’t know where that was but we looked it up on a map. The Amazon River goes through South America. “A delightful evocation of some of New York State’s most beloved foods. Guaranteed to make your stomach rumble as you read along.”

— Louis Alvarez, independent filmmaker, the Center for New American Media

PreS-Gr 1—Downing has taken the traditional song and put a New York spin on it. Instead of the usual foods assigned to each day of the week, this story depicts children eating apples, pastrami, Nathan’s hot dogs, and bagels and lox (possibly introducing them to some new vocabulary and food choices). Back matter includes a “Word Menu” describing the history of the Big Apple favorites, a list of official state foods, and sheet music for the song. Each spread offers a large-print line (or two) of text opposite a full-page, collage illustration that suits the mood of the book perfectly. A diverse group of children, including a girl in a wheelchair, is featured in the eye-catching artwork. A fun twist on a classic, to read aloud or to introduce to beginning readers.
