Los Suenos de los Islenos – The Dreams of the Louisiana Canary Islanders
This cultural program explores the heritage, songs and dances of Louisiana’s Islenos, who emigrated from the Canary Islands, Spain in 1778 to colonize four settlements, and to serve in the American Revolution. In full traditional Canary Islands dress from her ancestral homeland, Johnette Downing performs songs that tell the unique story of these Spanish colonial settlers in Louisiana. Among the highlights are songs played on the simple, the traditional 5-stringed Canarian instrument.
